WHAT IS A LUT?
A LUT stands for “Look Up Table”, which essentially is a “video preset” that allows you to quickly and efficiently color grade your footage. What it does is “remap” the color and luminance values of the footage, changing how it appears on screen. LUTs are most commonly found as .cube file extensions, meaning they affect the hue, saturation, and brightness of your image. These LUTs were designed to accurately match the look of DC Lightroom Presets.
WHAT PROGRAMS ARE THEY COMPATIBLE WITH?
LUTs are compatible with Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci Resolve.
HOW TO USE THESE LUTS:
There are 2 main types of LUTs - conversion LUTs and creative LUTs. Conversion LUTs are meant to “convert” your footage from Log/Flat profiles to a more balanced and neutral (Rec709) profile. From there, you can apply creative LUTs to add more of a stylized look to your footage.
These LUT packs are designed to be creative LUTs. If you’re filming in a Log profile, you’ll need to convert your LOG footage to a Rec.709 color space. Since every camera profile is slightly different, you will want to bring your footage to a neutral “base” level before applying any creative looks to it. Leeming LUTs, Gamut.io, and many other places offer some great conversion LUTs for all types of cameras
While the LUTs are designed to accurately match the LR preset packs, there are some limitations to how much of an effect some of the modifiers have compared to the Lightroom versions. Additionally, LUTs do not affect sharpness, grain, or noise reduction, so those would need to be added separately within your editing program if needed.
